Malaysian School - A New Approach to Teaching

The government of Malaysia is determined to increase global connectivity by introducing a free trade zone between the country and China. Accordingly, more and more international schools are opening their doors to students from China.

With increased competition, schools must adapt their teaching approaches to stand out from the rest. In this article, we will explore some innovative and effective teaching methods that an international school can use to attract and retain quality students.

Experimentation Is Key

Before becoming an  international school in malaysia , we were running a private school in Hong Kong, which was very much into innovation and experimentation. The main founders of the school had recently returned from living and working in Shanghai, where they had seen first hand the benefits that experimental teaching could bring. The Shanghai method is a teaching methodology that combines elements of eastern and western teaching styles to produce superior results.

After starting up the school, the founders began to take the approach as a guide to develop the school's curriculum and approach to teaching. One of the first things that they did was to hold a competition to see which classes would benefit most from being mixed. The answer was an experiment in social studies which had previously been conducted individually and relied heavily on rote learning. The experiment showed that students did much better when learning about social studies through group work and discussion, so the methodology was adopted across the school. Another area of the curriculum that was successfully reformed through trial and error was English. While English is a commonly required subject for international schools, the founders decided to put their own spin on the subject matter and came up with creative ways to engage their students, such as experiential learning and even a small project that they called a “scam” where they would ask students to approach strangers in the community and ask them questions about Malaysian culture.

Bring In The Experts

Another important factor behind the success of the school is that they brought in some of the best and brightest minds from outside the school to consult on matters relating to teaching and learning. For instance, the school's co-founder and executive head, Oliver Wegner, has worked with some of the biggest names in business and education, including Jack Ma and the Chinese Education minister, Cai Peilin.

These experts come from all over the world and have a range of experience, including from developed countries like the U.S. and Canada, to developing ones like Malaysia and China. Their expertise will be available to the entire student body and can help improve their grades and reduce stress.

Keep On Improving

One of the best things about the school, which is geared toward international students, is that it continues to improve and develop new methods and materials to make learning more effective and enjoyable. For example, on their website, the school points out that they are currently in the process of developing a bespoke learning platform as a result of lessons learned from implementing other new technologies.

In the near future, the school will be launching an app for students that will enhance their learning, as well as improve the communication and collaboration between teachers and students. It also allows parents to keep track of their children's progress, wherever they are in the world.

Along with the development of this app comes another innovation from the school: a cryptocurrency wallet that students can use to pay for their school materials such as books and supplies. The founders are determined to go paperless, as they feel that having paper records is a hindrance to learning. They also want to foster an eco-friendly mentality amongst their students, so reducing consumption is one of the pillars of their curriculum. It's clear that innovation and experimentation aren't just limited to the classroom: the school's entire approach to education and what they are doing to enhance the student experience, is founded on these principles.
